Becoming a minimalist 2

I realized even though I got rid of 95% of my stuff, it wasn’t enough.  I still didn’t feel like I was happier.  I felt like I had to get rid of more, so I got rid of almost everything I could, even the stuff I thought would make me happy and bring me satisfaction.  I even got rid of all my books and physical movies, I kept my digital copies.  I wasn’t trying to minimize my stuff this time, I was starting over for the most part.  The idea being that I would get rid of almost everything and then buy only the things that will bring meaning and joy to my life.  After doing this I felt good, and the next day I woke up feeling even better, in fact, I felt great the entire day.

I decided later that day that I would buy only one book at a time, reading the entire book before buying a new one, and the books I get will make my life better and add meaning to my life.  I thought of buying only digital copies of books to avoid getting more physical items, but I think a book feels better in my hands.  Plus, I don’t want to get too much into using digital things.

While I’m on the subject, digital things can be just as much of a problem as physical ones.  How much time do people actually spend on their electronic devices?  It seems like we are always on them, even when we are around other people.  In my opinion, we should be interacting with other people directly, not being distracted by our electronic devices, which I must admit, I’ve done it before.  I think that our lives will be much better if we focus on real life human interactions, if we put away the electronic devices when we are with other people.

Don’t get me wrong.  I know that there are times when it is necessary to use them, like if you need to pull out your phone to look up the answer to a question someone else has, or you need to find directions to a destination.  I believe those things should only be done when necessary though. The bottom line, we should never let our electronics interfere with our human interactions.

Even though it feels good to get rid of almost everything, it is important to find things to do that will bring happiness, or else you are sitting around with nothing to do, and you will end up getting bored.  So, my next step is to move on to the next phase of my journey.  I’m not 100% sure what that will be, but I will let you know when I discover it.
